On April 6, 1909, Robert Peary recorded his latitude as 89°57′11″—within four miles of his goal. A National Geographic Society panel reviewed Peary’s records and unanimously concluded that he had reached the North Pole that day. No one could confirm the accuracy of his measurements, however, and later experts found the speed of his final run improbable.
